STEVEN UNIVERSE S3:E4-REVIEW

What an odd couple!
Continuing from the previous episode, Lapis has decided to stay on Earth, but finds discomfort upon realizing she'll be living with Peridot. There's a fun idea for an episode, which in fairness the show takes advantage of, but I must admit I wish the show had taken a different route for the two. That's not to say the episode is bad, far from it, it contains some of the biggest laughs I've had for the show to date. Honestly, I just feel like the episode could've benefitted by having a segment where Lapis tries living with the other Crystal Gems, which could've been her motivation in trying to live with Peridot. After all, does Lapis even like anyone besides Steven? I don't think she has shown any real friendliness to anyone else.

Our episode, is pretty much joke after joke, of Peridot's desperation for a friend, while Lapis just has none of it. It's funny, because it's a bit of a reversal from their first appearance together, Peridot is powerless, while Lapis is being cruel. There's also a charm from seeing Lapis constantly switch from caring to Steven, while being spiteful towards Peridot. Every gift, or attempt at kindness is met with scorn, especially one in particular, I won't spoil it, but Peridot not realizing the connection to said "act  of kindness" was reminiscent of  Malachite is one of the show's funniest gags.

Eventually the episode decides to have an action climax, which is random, but feels necessary considering Peridot would be wanted for insulting her superior last season. This is where Lapis finally tries to warm up to Peridot, which is nice, but I can't say it'd be my ideal way to create a friendship between the two. Still, it works and leads into a cliffhanger wherein another Ruby appears. Neat.

So far, I've noticed this season has been ending with cliffhangers of sorts, which is an interesting approach for the episodes. I'm not sure if it'll work in the show's favor, but I'm enjoying the season so far, which is good enough for me, and this episode is definitely a fun addition to the series.
